Before you ask, yes I reviewed a book called The Money Saving MOM’s Budget. You all know that I’m not a mom, but I knew this book would be very beneficial for my wonderful readers. Isn’t everyone trying to slash their spending? Doesn’t everyone want to learn how to make more money?
Crystal Paine (You know her as Money Saving Mom) has written an extremely thorough, step-by-step guide to get you out of debt faster. Not in debt? No problem– You can still benefit from Crystal’s budgeting techniques, her cash envelope system, and even how to organize your life. My personal favorites are the worksheets in the back, especially the goal setting sheet!
Going into this, I was worried we would not benefit from this book. We aren’t in debt, we are cheaper than dirt (not really), we don’t have any loans, and we are actively putting away to make a down payment on our first home. Why do we need to read a book on how to slash your spending if we’re doing a good job at it? Well, I’m glad I did because there’s more to learn.
We learned some new tips! Our favorite method that Crystal teachers is that you have to organize your life in order to save money– which is so true. While I’m pretty crazy about being organized, I thought I would organize my life just how Crystal said to. We went room by room and donated, sold, or pitched what we didn’t need. It feels so nice to be clutter-free (especially after the holidays!).
As you probably know, Crystal (like me) is a Dave Ramsey fan. She believes in cash only, and that works for her family. She provides tons of information on how to get credit cards out of your life for good and just stick with a debit card. This is an area we had trouble with. Because we actively use our credit cards and pay them off completely each month, we didn’t understand why we had to put them in the freezer (literally). Nathan and I talked about it and we came up with this– Not everyone has great self control. Some people buy things just because they can with a credit card.
Because saving money is an area I excel in (and blog about daily), most of the information provided I already knew. That’s not saying this book wasn’t excellent, because it was! It made me sit down and realize I can be doing even more to save money!
